Traumatic thoracic aorta-innominate vein fistula: a case report. 1986

T J Szymanski, and J L Llera

Traumatic thoracic aorta-innominate vein fistulae are very rare. We present the case of a 20-year-old woman who sustained a stab wound to the left side of the chest. The physical examination was unremarkable. A chest radiograph showed a widened mediastinum, and arteriography demonstrated an arterio-venous fistula involving the thoracic aorta and the innominate vein. Operative repair was accomplished and the patient recovered.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D010406 Penicillins A group of antibiotics that contain 6-aminopenicillanic acid with a side chain attached to the 6-amino group. The penicillin nucleus is the chief structural requirement for biological activity. The side-chain structure determines many of the antibacterial and pharmacological characteristics. D011183 Postoperative Complications Pathologic processes that affect patients after a surgical procedure. They may or may not be related to the disease for which the surgery was done, and they may or may not be direct results of the surgery. Complication, Postoperative,Complications, Postoperative,Postoperative Complication
D011654 Pulmonary Edema Excessive accumulation of extravascular fluid in the lung, an indication of a serious underlying disease or disorder. Pulmonary edema prevents efficient PULMONARY GAS EXCHANGE in the PULMONARY ALVEOLI, and can be life-threatening. D001164 Arteriovenous Fistula An abnormal direct communication between an artery and a vein without passing through the CAPILLARIES. An A-V fistula usually leads to the formation of a dilated sac-like connection, arteriovenous aneurysm. The locations and size of the shunts determine the degree of effects on the cardiovascular functions such as BLOOD PRESSURE and HEART RATE.
