In this study, 163 normal fetuses of between 25 and 41 weeks' gestational age were examined sonographically using B-mode and Doppler equipment to measure umbilical vein diameter, umbilical venous flow amount (UVFA) and velocity (UVFV), and abdominal area (AA). A total number of 230 examinations were performed. The relationships between gestational age and umbilical vein diameter, UVFA, UVFV, and the UVFA/AA ratio were analyzed. Throughout pregnancy, the umbilical venous blood flow velocity remained relatively constant, whereas the umbilical venous blood flow amount increased steadily with gestational age and was proportional to abdominal area.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D011247 Pregnancy The status during which female mammals carry their developing young (EMBRYOS or FETUSES) in utero before birth, beginning from FERTILIZATION to BIRTH. Gestation,Pregnancies

D005260 Female Females
D005333 Fetus The unborn young of a viviparous mammal, in the postembryonic period, after the major structures have been outlined. In humans, the unborn young from the end of the eighth week after CONCEPTION until BIRTH, as distinguished from the earlier EMBRYO, MAMMALIAN. D005865 Gestational Age The age of the conceptus, beginning from the time of FERTILIZATION. In clinical obstetrics, the gestational age is often estimated from the onset of the last MENSTRUATION which is about 2 weeks before OVULATION and fertilization. It is also estimated to begin from fertilization, estrus, coitus, or artificial insemination. D000005 Abdomen That portion of the body that lies between the THORAX and the PELVIS. Abdomens
D014463 Ultrasonography The visualization of deep structures of the body by recording the reflections or echoes of ultrasonic pulses directed into the tissues. Use of ultrasound for imaging or diagnostic purposes employs frequencies ranging from 1.6 to 10 megahertz.
