Anterior encephalocele presenting as nasolacrimal obstruction. 1986

E R Rashid, and T J Bergstrom, and R M Evans, and A C Arnold

A case of congenital anterior encephalocele presented originally with nasolacrimal obstruction. Associated paranasal masses and hypertelorism suggested the diagnosis, which was confirmed and delineated by computed tomography. Anterior encephalocele has various clinical presentations, but the diagnosis should be suspected in a child with nasolacrimal obstruction and associated congenital anomalies, particularly paranasal masses. Early recognition is essential to prevent trauma to CNS tissue, to prompt evaluation for other congenital anomalies, and to facilitate appropriate neurosurgical repair.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007223 Infant A child between 1 and 23 months of age. Infants
D007767 Lacrimal Duct Obstruction Interference with the secretion of tears by the lacrimal glands. Obstruction of the LACRIMAL SAC or NASOLACRIMAL DUCT causing acute or chronic inflammation of the lacrimal sac (DACRYOCYSTITIS). It is caused also in infants by failure of the nasolacrimal duct to open into the inferior meatus and occurs about the third week of life. In adults occlusion may occur spontaneously or after injury or nasal disease. D002675 Child, Preschool A child between the ages of 2 and 5. Children, Preschool,Preschool Child,Preschool Children
D004677 Encephalocele Brain tissue herniation through a congenital or acquired defect in the skull. The majority of congenital encephaloceles occur in the occipital or frontal regions. Clinical features include a protuberant mass that may be pulsatile. The quantity and location of protruding neural tissue determines the type and degree of neurologic deficit. Visual defects, psychomotor developmental delay, and persistent motor deficits frequently occur.
