Dibutyl phthalate (DBP), a plasticizer, is a teratogen in mice and rabbits but produces fetal loss in the rat. Long-term dosing studies indicating reduced fertility in the rat suggested a maternal effect of the compound. The decidual cell response (DCR) and pregnant rats were used to examine whether DBP affects maternal physiological parameters independent of the compound's fetotoxic effect. DBP has no effect on the DCR, pregnant uterine weight, number of implantation sites, ovarian weight, or serum progesterone concentration during early pregnancy or pseudopregnancy. These data show that short-term dosing with DBP has no direct maternal effect in the rat and suggest that the viability of preimplantation embryos is not compromised.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D009929 Organ Size The measurement of an organ in volume, mass, or heaviness. Organ Volume,Organ Weight,Size, Organ,Weight, Organ
D010053 Ovary The reproductive organ (GONADS) in female animals. In vertebrates, the ovary contains two functional parts: the OVARIAN FOLLICLE for the production of female germ cells (OOGENESIS); and the endocrine cells (GRANULOSA CELLS; THECA CELLS; and LUTEAL CELLS) for the production of ESTROGENS and PROGESTERONE. Ovaries
D010064 Embryo Implantation Endometrial implantation of EMBRYO, MAMMALIAN at the BLASTOCYST stage. Blastocyst Implantation,Decidual Cell Reaction,Implantation, Blastocyst,Nidation,Ovum Implantation,Blastocyst Implantations,Decidual Cell Reactions,Embryo Implantations,Implantation, Embryo,Implantation, Ovum,Implantations, Blastocyst,Implantations, Embryo,Implantations, Ovum,Nidations,Ovum Implantations
D010795 Phthalic Acids A group of compounds that has the general structure of a dicarboxylic acid-substituted benzene ring. The ortho-isomer is used in dye manufacture. (Dorland, 28th ed) Acids, Phthalic
D011247 Pregnancy The status during which female mammals carry their developing young (EMBRYOS or FETUSES) in utero before birth, beginning from FERTILIZATION to BIRTH. Gestation,Pregnancies
D011374 Progesterone The major progestational steroid that is secreted primarily by the CORPUS LUTEUM and the PLACENTA. Progesterone acts on the UTERUS, the MAMMARY GLANDS and the BRAIN. It is required in EMBRYO IMPLANTATION; PREGNANCY maintenance, and the development of mammary tissue for MILK production. Progesterone, converted from PREGNENOLONE, also serves as an intermediate in the biosynthesis of GONADAL STEROID HORMONES and adrenal CORTICOSTEROIDS. Pregnenedione,Progesterone, (13 alpha,17 alpha)-(+-)-Isomer,Progesterone, (17 alpha)-Isomer,Progesterone, (9 beta,10 alpha)-Isomer
D011555 Pseudopregnancy An acyclic state that resembles PREGNANCY in that there is no ovarian cycle, ESTROUS CYCLE, or MENSTRUAL CYCLE. Unlike pregnancy, there is no EMBRYO IMPLANTATION. Pseudopregnancy can be experimentally induced to form DECIDUOMA in the UTERUS. Pseudocyesis,Pseudopregnancies
D003993 Dibutyl Phthalate A plasticizer used in most plastics and found in water, air, soil, plants and animals. It may have some adverse effects with long-term exposure. Butyl Phthalate,Di-n-Butyl Phthalate,Di n Butyl Phthalate,Phthalate, Butyl,Phthalate, Di-n-Butyl,Phthalate, Dibutyl
D004971 Estrus The period in the ESTROUS CYCLE associated with maximum sexual receptivity and fertility in non-primate female mammals.
D005260 Female Females
