A microcomputer-based system for the management of vascular surgical references. 1987

As the number and diversity of contributions to the medical literature continue to grow at an astronomic rate, vascular surgeons are feeling increasingly frustrated in their efforts to remain current with the latest developments in their specialty. The introduction of powerful, inexpensive microcomputers and "user-friendly" programs for data base management has made it possible to organize large amounts of information for subsequent review. Using such a microcomputer-based system, we developed a practical approach to the storage and retrieval of vascular surgical references, which permits virtually unlimited numbers of articles to be catalogued and quickly retrieved with multiple search parameters. This system has been operational in our Division of Vascular Surgery for nearly a year and currently contains more than 3000 journal articles that are readily available for resident teaching, patient care, and research.
