Evoked potentials (EPs) were studied in patients with endogenic depression prior to and during the therapy. It was found that a reduction in the maximum amplitude of EPs reflecting the initial severity of depression could not serve as an indicator of its time-course in the treatment by tricyclic antidepressants. In contrast, the newly identified electrophysiological sign of endogenic depression, a number of EP waves, shifted toward normalization in the process of the treatment parallelled by a decrease in the severity of the depressive syndrome.

D000639 Amitriptyline Tricyclic antidepressant with anticholinergic and sedative properties. It appears to prevent the re-uptake of norepinephrine and serotonin at nerve terminals, thus potentiating the action of these neurotransmitters. Amitriptyline also appears to antagonize cholinergic and alpha-1 adrenergic responses to bioactive amines.
