Brainstem auditory evoked potentials in the assessment of hearing. 1986

B R Mallinson

The role of the brainstem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) in the diagnosis of hearing loss is described. Results obtained for 97 children referred for this procedure are analysed. The advantages and disadvantages of BAEP assessment are contrasted with those of behavioural audiometry. Indications for the use of BAEP assessment are listed and 3 illustrative case reports are presented.

D001300 Audiometry, Evoked Response A form of electrophysiologic audiometry in which an analog computer is included in the circuit to average out ongoing or spontaneous brain wave activity. A characteristic pattern of response to a sound stimulus may then become evident. Evoked response audiometry is known also as electric response audiometry.
