Animal models have played an important role in fetal physiological and behavioural research, and will continue to do so. They can provide important insights into processes and mechanisms, which can then be compared with findings from the more limited observations possible on the human fetus and neonate. Since each species has its own properties, however, one must be cautious in generalizing from findings obtained in these animal models to human fetal physiology and behaviour.
