Extended caloric tests. 1986

S J Wetmore

The standard ABB remains the most popular test of vestibular function. The use of air caloric irrigations or the closed loop water system seem to be scientifically sound alternatives to the use of open water irrigation. Although controversy still surrounds the use of monothermal warm calorics as a screening test, several studies have shown its reliability. The Torok monothermal differential caloric test seems to be a good alternative to the ABB, but more studies need to be done showing its results in other hands. Some of the other tests mentioned in this report may be helpful as ancillary tests for use in patients in whom the standard tests produce inconsistent findings.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007507 Therapeutic Irrigation The washing of a body cavity or surface by flowing water or solution for therapy or diagnosis. Douching,Lavage,Douchings,Irrigation, Therapeutic,Irrigations, Therapeutic,Lavages,Therapeutic Irrigations
D002150 Caloric Tests Elicitation of a rotatory nystagmus by stimulating the semicircular canals with water or air which is above or below body temperature. In warm caloric stimulation a rotatory nystagmus is developed toward the side of the stimulated ear; in cold, away from the stimulated side. Absence of nystagmus indicates the labyrinth is not functioning. Barany Test,Barany's Test,Baranys Test,Caloric Test,Test, Barany,Test, Barany's,Test, Caloric,Tests, Caloric
D004424 Ear Canal The narrow passage way that conducts the sound collected by the EAR AURICLE to the TYMPANIC MEMBRANE. Auditory Canal, External,External Acoustic Canal,External Acoustic Meatus,External Auditory Canal,External Ear Canal,Acoustic Canal, External,Acoustic Canals, External,Acoustic Meatus, External,Auditory Canals, External,Canal, Ear,Canal, External Ear,Canals, Ear,Canals, External Ear,Ear Canal, External,Ear Canals,Ear Canals, External,External Acoustic Canals,External Auditory Canals,External Ear Canals
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000388 Air The mixture of gases present in the earth's atmosphere consisting of oxygen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, and small amounts of other gases.
D013696 Temperature The property of objects that determines the direction of heat flow when they are placed in direct thermal contact. The temperature is the energy of microscopic motions (vibrational and translational) of the particles of atoms. Temperatures
D014724 Vestibular Function Tests A number of tests used to determine if the brain or balance portion of the inner ear are causing dizziness. Function Test, Vestibular,Function Tests, Vestibular,Test, Vestibular Function,Tests, Vestibular Function,Vestibular Function Test
D014867 Water A clear, odorless, tasteless liquid that is essential for most animal and plant life and is an excellent solvent for many substances. The chemical formula is hydrogen oxide (H2O). (McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 4th ed) Hydrogen Oxide
