Calcitoninlike immunoreactive and bombesinlike immunoreactive endocrine-paracrine cells of the human prostate. 1986

P A di Sant'Agnese

Calcitoninlike immunoreactive and bombesinlike immunoreactive endocrine-paracrine (EP) cells are reported for the first time, to our knowledge, in the human prostate gland and urethra. While calcitoninlike immunoreactive and bombesinlike immunoreactive EP cells account for only a small percentage of the total number of prostatic and urethral EP cells, they underscore the heterogeneity and potential significance of these cells. Prostatic and urethral EP cells may well play an important role not only in the normal state but in such diverse pathologic conditions as infertility, nodular hyperplasia, and prostatic malignancy.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008297 Male Males
D011467 Prostate A gland in males that surrounds the neck of the URINARY BLADDER and the URETHRA. It secretes a substance that liquefies coagulated semen. It is situated in the pelvic cavity behind the lower part of the PUBIC SYMPHYSIS, above the deep layer of the triangular ligament, and rests upon the RECTUM. Prostates
D001839 Bombesin A tetradecapeptide originally obtained from the skins of toads Bombina bombina and B. variegata. It is also an endogenous neurotransmitter in many animals including mammals. Bombesin affects vascular and other smooth muscle, gastric secretion, and renal circulation and function. Bombesin 14,Bombesin Dihydrochloride,Dihydrochloride, Bombesin
D002116 Calcitonin A peptide hormone that lowers calcium concentration in the blood. In humans, it is released by thyroid cells and acts to decrease the formation and absorptive activity of osteoclasts. Its role in regulating plasma calcium is much greater in children and in certain diseases than in normal adults. Thyrocalcitonin,Calcitonin(1-32),Calcitrin,Ciba 47175-BA,Eel Calcitonin,Calcitonin, Eel,Ciba 47175 BA,Ciba 47175BA
D005755 Gastrins A family of gastrointestinal peptide hormones that excite the secretion of GASTRIC JUICE. They may also occur in the central nervous system where they are presumed to be neurotransmitters. Gastrin
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D014521 Urethra A tube that transports URINE from the URINARY BLADDER to the outside of the body in both the sexes. It also has a reproductive function in the male by providing a passage for SPERM.
