[Postoperative blood-sugar regulation in pancreatectomized patients using the artificial "beta cell"]. 1979

M B Ozyol, and C Herfarth, and W Kerner, and E F Pfeiffer

Seven patients who had undergone total duodenopancreatectomy were connected postoperatively to an artificial 'beta cell', which is a computer-regulated, glucose-controlled-insulin-infusion-system. Despite high-calorie parenteral nutrition, the apparatus enabled successful regulation of the diabetes that followed removal of the pancreas in our patients during the immediate postoperative period (7 days). The artificial beta cell is capable of exogenously regulating the carbohydrate metabolism of pancreatectomized diabetics, even in the extreme conditions immediately following operation.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007515 Islets of Langerhans Irregular microscopic structures consisting of cords of endocrine cells that are scattered throughout the PANCREAS among the exocrine acini. Each islet is surrounded by connective tissue fibers and penetrated by a network of capillaries. There are four major cell types. The most abundant beta cells (50-80%) secrete INSULIN. Alpha cells (5-20%) secrete GLUCAGON. PP cells (10-35%) secrete PANCREATIC POLYPEPTIDE. Delta cells (~5%) secrete SOMATOSTATIN. D010179 Pancreas A nodular organ in the ABDOMEN that contains a mixture of ENDOCRINE GLANDS and EXOCRINE GLANDS. The small endocrine portion consists of the ISLETS OF LANGERHANS secreting a number of hormones into the blood stream. The large exocrine portion (EXOCRINE PANCREAS) is a compound acinar gland that secretes several digestive enzymes into the pancreatic ductal system that empties into the DUODENUM.

D011182 Postoperative Care The period of care beginning when the patient is removed from surgery and aimed at meeting the patient's psychological and physical needs directly after surgery. D001187 Artificial Organs Devices intended to replace non-functioning organs. They may be temporary or permanent. Since they are intended always to function as the natural organs they are replacing, they should be differentiated from PROSTHESES AND IMPLANTS and specific types of prostheses which, though also replacements for body parts, are frequently cosmetic (EYE, ARTIFICIAL) as well as functional (ARTIFICIAL LIMBS).
