Lipid peroxidation in patients with essential hypertension. 1986

M Uysal, and H Bulur, and D Sener, and H Oz

Plasma lipid peroxide levels and the susceptibility of erythrocytes to lipid peroxidation were significantly increased in patients with essential hypertension. Patients with retinopathy had higher lipid peroxide levels compared to those without retinopathy. No change was observed in spontaneous hemolysis test values, an indicator of vitamin E status, and erythrocyte glutathione levels of essential hypertensives compared to normotensives. However, erythrocyte glutathione levels were found to be decreased in patients with retinopathy. These results showed that lipid peroxidation was increased in patients with essential hypertension and that this increase was more pronounced in those with retinopathy.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D006973 Hypertension Persistently high systemic arterial BLOOD PRESSURE. Based on multiple readings (BLOOD PRESSURE DETERMINATION), hypertension is currently defined as when SYSTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently greater than 140 mm Hg or when DIASTOLIC PRESSURE is consistently 90 mm Hg or more. D008054 Lipid Peroxides Peroxides produced in the presence of a free radical by the oxidation of unsaturated fatty acids in the cell in the presence of molecular oxygen. The formation of lipid peroxides results in the destruction of the original lipid leading to the loss of integrity of the membranes. They therefore cause a variety of toxic effects in vivo and their formation is considered a pathological process in biological systems. Their formation can be inhibited by antioxidants, such as vitamin E, structural separation or low oxygen tension. D005978 Glutathione A tripeptide with many roles in cells. It conjugates to drugs to make them more soluble for excretion, is a cofactor for some enzymes, is involved in protein disulfide bond rearrangement and reduces peroxides.
