The effect of rimantadine and ammonium chloride on the RNA synthesis of Sindbis virus, added in different times of infection cycle, was studied. When compounds were presented in period of adsorption and first hour post-infection, the maximal inhibitory effect was found. The step blocked by rimantadine was identified as uncoating process (deprotainization). This connection was confirmed by the finding that rimantadine markedly reduced the change of the virus RNA into the nuclease-sensitive form.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D003588 Cytopathogenic Effect, Viral Visible morphologic changes in cells infected with viruses. It includes shutdown of cellular RNA and protein synthesis, cell fusion, release of lysosomal enzymes, changes in cell membrane permeability, diffuse changes in intracellular structures, presence of viral inclusion bodies, and chromosomal aberrations. It excludes malignant transformation, which is CELL TRANSFORMATION, VIRAL. Viral cytopathogenic effects provide a valuable method for identifying and classifying the infecting viruses. D003864 Depression, Chemical The decrease in a measurable parameter of a PHYSIOLOGICAL PROCESS, including cellular, microbial, and plant; immunological, cardiovascular, respiratory, reproductive, urinary, digestive, neural, musculoskeletal, ocular, and skin physiological processes; or METABOLIC PROCESS, including enzymatic and other pharmacological processes, by a drug or other chemical. D000218 Adamantane A tricyclo bridged hydrocarbon. Diamantane
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D012367 RNA, Viral Ribonucleic acid that makes up the genetic material of viruses. Viral RNA
D012845 Sindbis Virus The type species of ALPHAVIRUS normally transmitted to birds by CULEX mosquitoes in Egypt, South Africa, India, Malaya, the Philippines, and Australia. It may be associated with fever in humans. Serotypes (differing by less than 17% in nucleotide sequence) include Babanki, Kyzylagach, and Ockelbo viruses. Babanki virus,Kyzylagach virus,Ockelbo Virus
