Cerebrospinal fluid centrifuge analysis in primary amebic meningoencephalitis due to Naegleria fowleri. 1985

R L Benson, and L Ansbacher, and R E Hutchison, and W Rogers

We describe a case of primary amebic meningoencephalitis due to Naegleria fowleri. This is the first reported case, to our knowledge, in Missouri. Emphasis is placed on the morphologic identification of degenerating amebas in a cytospin preparation of cerebrospinal fluid using Wright's stain during the rapidly progressive meningoencephalitic stage.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008590 Meningoencephalitis An inflammatory process involving the brain (ENCEPHALITIS) and meninges (MENINGITIS), most often produced by pathogenic organisms which invade the central nervous system, and occasionally by toxins, autoimmune disorders, and other conditions. Cerebromeningitis,Encephalomeningitis,Cerebromeningitides,Encephalomeningitides,Meningoencephalitides
D009336 Necrosis The death of cells in an organ or tissue due to disease, injury or failure of the blood supply.
D001921 Brain The part of CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM that is contained within the skull (CRANIUM). Arising from the NEURAL TUBE, the embryonic brain is comprised of three major parts including PROSENCEPHALON (the forebrain); MESENCEPHALON (the midbrain); and RHOMBENCEPHALON (the hindbrain). The developed brain consists of CEREBRUM; CEREBELLUM; and other structures in the BRAIN STEM. Encephalon
D002498 Centrifugation Process of using a rotating machine to generate centrifugal force to separate substances of different densities, remove moisture, or simulate gravitational effects. It employs a large motor-driven apparatus with a long arm, at the end of which human and animal subjects, biological specimens, or equipment can be revolved and rotated at various speeds to study gravitational effects. D000562 Amebiasis Infection with any of various amebae. It is an asymptomatic carrier state in most individuals, but diseases ranging from chronic, mild diarrhea to fulminant dysentery may occur. D000656 Amoeba A genus of ameboid protozoa. Characteristics include a vesicular nucleus and the formation of several PSEUDOPODIA, one of which is dominant at a given time. Reproduction occurs asexually by binary fission. Ameba
