Immunotoxicological investigation of the effects of a pesticide; cypermethrin. 1985

The effects of a synthetic pyrethroid pesticide cypermethrin on the immune system were studied. The effect of a daily oral administration of 1/40, 1/20 and 1/10 of LD50 was studied in rabbits for its influence on the humoral immune response after vaccination with Salmonella typhi, as well as on cell-mediated immunity. The two higher doses induced a significant dose-dependent decrease of serum antibody titers. The skin redness measured in the tuberculin skin test showed the same dose-dependent tendency. In subacute experiments with rats, a significant dose-dependent decrease was observed both in the anti-ovalbumin titer of blood sera measured in passive hemagglutination test and in the autologous rosette-formation of T-lymphocytes in groups fed the higher doses.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007107 Immune System The body's defense mechanism against foreign organisms or substances and deviant native cells. It includes the humoral immune response and the cell-mediated response and consists of a complex of interrelated cellular, molecular, and genetic components. Immune Systems,System, Immune,Systems, Immune
D007111 Immunity, Cellular Manifestations of the immune response which are mediated by antigen-sensitized T-lymphocytes via lymphokines or direct cytotoxicity. This takes place in the absence of circulating antibody or where antibody plays a subordinate role. D011722 Pyrethrins The active insecticidal constituent of CHRYSANTHEMUM CINERARIIFOLIUM flowers. Pyrethrin I is the pyretholone ester of chrysanthemummonocarboxylic acid and pyrethrin II is the pyretholone ester of chrysanthemumdicarboxylic acid monomethyl ester. Pyrethrin,Pyrethroid,Pyrethroids
D011817 Rabbits A burrowing plant-eating mammal with hind limbs that are longer than its fore limbs. It belongs to the family Leporidae of the order Lagomorpha, and in contrast to hares, possesses 22 instead of 24 pairs of chromosomes.
