A sequence-specific antibody that recognizes a portion of the prosegment of human renin precursor was raised and used to provide direct evidence that plasma inactive renin contains the prosequence of renal renin and is therefore probably prorenin rather than an inactivated form of previously active renin. The information may help not only to resolve a major controversy concerning the nature of inactive renin in human plasma but also to elucidate its exact physiological role.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007668 Kidney Body organ that filters blood for the secretion of URINE and that regulates ion concentrations. Kidneys
D012083 Renin A highly specific (Leu-Leu) endopeptidase that generates ANGIOTENSIN I from its precursor ANGIOTENSINOGEN, leading to a cascade of reactions which elevate BLOOD PRESSURE and increase sodium retention by the kidney in the RENIN-ANGIOTENSIN SYSTEM. The enzyme was formerly listed as EC 3.4.99.19. D002846 Chromatography, Affinity A chromatographic technique that utilizes the ability of biological molecules, often ANTIBODIES, to bind to certain ligands specifically and reversibly. It is used in protein biochemistry. (McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 4th ed) Chromatography, Bioaffinity,Immunochromatography,Affinity Chromatography,Bioaffinity Chromatography
D003429 Cross Reactions Serological reactions in which an antiserum against one antigen reacts with a non-identical but closely related antigen. Cross Reaction,Reaction, Cross,Reactions, Cross
D004792 Enzyme Precursors Physiologically inactive substances that can be converted to active enzymes. Enzyme Precursor,Proenzyme,Proenzymes,Zymogen,Zymogens,Precursor, Enzyme,Precursors, Enzyme
D006651 Histocytochemistry Study of intracellular distribution of chemicals, reaction sites, enzymes, etc., by means of staining reactions, radioactive isotope uptake, selective metal distribution in electron microscopy, or other methods. Cytochemistry

D000917 Antibody Formation The production of ANTIBODIES by proliferating and differentiated B-LYMPHOCYTES under stimulation by ANTIGENS. Antibody Production,Antibody Response,Antibody Responses,Formation, Antibody,Production, Antibody,Response, Antibody,Responses, Antibody
D000918 Antibody Specificity The property of antibodies which enables them to react with some ANTIGENIC DETERMINANTS and not with others. Specificity is dependent on chemical composition, physical forces, and molecular structure at the binding site. Antibody Specificities,Specificities, Antibody,Specificity, Antibody
D001666 Binding Sites, Antibody Local surface sites on antibodies which react with antigen determinant sites on antigens (EPITOPES.) They are formed from parts of the variable regions of FAB FRAGMENTS. Antibody Binding Sites,Paratopes,Antibody Binding Site,Binding Site, Antibody,Paratope
