Blood loss measurement during transurethral resection of the prostate gland. 1985

M Freedman, and S W van der Molen, and E Makings

The application of the indicator dilution technique for the estimation of blood loss during transurethral resection of the prostate gland is explained. The feasibility of using potassium ions as an intrinsic indicator was investigated. The most important factors affecting blood loss are considered. The advantages and inherent sources of error are discussed and some tentative conclusions drawn concerning the factors affecting blood loss.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007201 Indicator Dilution Techniques Methods for assessing flow through a system by injection of a known quantity of an indicator, such as a dye, radionuclide, or chilled liquid, into the system and monitoring its concentration over time at a specific point in the system. D007431 Intraoperative Complications Complications that affect patients during surgery. They may or may not be associated with the disease for which the surgery is done, or within the same surgical procedure. D008297 Male Males
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D011188 Potassium An element in the alkali group of metals with an atomic symbol K, atomic number 19, and atomic weight 39.10. It is the chief cation in the intracellular fluid of muscle and other cells. Potassium ion is a strong electrolyte that plays a significant role in the regulation of fluid volume and maintenance of the WATER-ELECTROLYTE BALANCE.
D011468 Prostatectomy Complete or partial surgical removal of the prostate. Three primary approaches are commonly employed: suprapubic - removal through an incision above the pubis and through the urinary bladder; retropubic - as for suprapubic but without entering the urinary bladder; and transurethral (TRANSURETHRAL RESECTION OF PROSTATE). D006454 Hemoglobins The oxygen-carrying proteins of ERYTHROCYTES. They are found in all vertebrates and some invertebrates. The number of globin subunits in the hemoglobin quaternary structure differs between species. Structures range from monomeric to a variety of multimeric arrangements.
