[Reaction of HCl secretion, total proteolytic activity and pepsin after a selective proximal vagotomy in duodenal ulcer patients]. 1979

E G Lindenschmidt, and H D Becker

The gastric secretion of hydrochloric acid, total proteolytic activity, and especially pepsin were studied before and 6 months after selective proximal vagotomy in 15 patients suffering from recurrent duodenal ulcer, and compared with that of ten sound volunteers. The patients with duodenal ulcer showed a significantly increased secretion of acid and proteolytic enzymes. After vagotomy, the basal acid output was reduced by 70%, the secretion of the total proteolytic activity by 54%, and that of pepsin by 45%. The concentration of the total proteolytic activity and of pepsin in the gastric juice was increased after vagotomy. Although the total basal proteolytic activity after vagotomy was still increased by 15% as compared with that in the volunteers, due to the drastically reduced basal acid output the actual intragastric basal proteolytic activity was expected to be reduced after vagotomy.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D010418 Pentagastrin A synthetic pentapeptide that has effects like gastrin when given parenterally. It stimulates the secretion of gastric acid, pepsin, and intrinsic factor, and has been used as a diagnostic aid. Acignost,Gastrin Pentapeptide,Peptavlon,Pentapeptide, Gastrin
D010434 Pepsin A Formed from pig pepsinogen by cleavage of one peptide bond. The enzyme is a single polypeptide chain and is inhibited by methyl 2-diaazoacetamidohexanoate. It cleaves peptides preferentially at the carbonyl linkages of phenylalanine or leucine and acts as the principal digestive enzyme of gastric juice. Pepsin,Pepsin 1,Pepsin 3
D010447 Peptide Hydrolases Hydrolases that specifically cleave the peptide bonds found in PROTEINS and PEPTIDES. Examples of sub-subclasses for this group include EXOPEPTIDASES and ENDOPEPTIDASES. D012008 Recurrence The return of a sign, symptom, or disease after a remission. Recrudescence,Relapse,Recrudescences,Recurrences,Relapses
D004381 Duodenal Ulcer A PEPTIC ULCER located in the DUODENUM. Curling's Ulcer,Curling Ulcer,Curlings Ulcer,Duodenal Ulcers,Ulcer, Curling,Ulcer, Duodenal,Ulcers, Duodenal
D004789 Enzyme Activation Conversion of an inactive form of an enzyme to one possessing metabolic activity. It includes 1, activation by ions (activators); 2, activation by cofactors (coenzymes); and 3, conversion of an enzyme precursor (proenzyme or zymogen) to an active enzyme. Activation, Enzyme,Activations, Enzyme,Enzyme Activations
D005750 Gastric Juice The liquid secretion of the stomach mucosa consisting of hydrochloric acid (GASTRIC ACID); PEPSINOGENS; INTRINSIC FACTOR; GASTRIN; MUCUS; and the bicarbonate ion (BICARBONATES). (From Best & Taylor's Physiological Basis of Medical Practice, 12th ed, p651) Gastric Juices,Juice, Gastric,Juices, Gastric
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
D014628 Vagotomy The interruption or removal of any part of the vagus (10th cranial) nerve. Vagotomy may be performed for research or for therapeutic purposes. Vagotomies
