Forty one non emaciated patients undergoing major visceral surgery were randomly divided into three groups according to the postoperative parenteral diet (0% fat versus 30% or 50% fat). During five days daily nitrogen balance was studied. There was no evidence of any significant difference between the group 0% and the group 50%. On the other hand significant differences occurred in group 30% on the second, third and fifth postoperative days. The responsibility of inappropriate glucose intakes in envisaged.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008055 Lipids A generic term for fats and lipoids, the alcohol-ether-soluble constituents of protoplasm, which are insoluble in water. They comprise the fats, fatty oils, essential oils, waxes, phospholipids, glycolipids, sulfolipids, aminolipids, chromolipids (lipochromes), and fatty acids. D009584 Nitrogen An element with the atomic symbol N, atomic number 7, and atomic weight [14.00643; 14.00728]. Nitrogen exists as a diatomic gas and makes up about 78% of the earth's atmosphere by volume. It is a constituent of proteins and nucleic acids and found in all living cells.
D010288 Parenteral Nutrition The administering of nutrients for assimilation and utilization by a patient who cannot maintain adequate nutrition by enteral feeding alone. Nutrients are administered by a route other than the alimentary canal (e.g., intravenously, subcutaneously).
