Porous hydroxyapatite ceramics for use in neurosurgical practice. 1986

T Koyama, and J Handa

Hydroxyapatite ceramics have been increasingly used as an inert prosthetic material in the practice of reconstructive surgery and dentistry. However, the use of this material, which has excellent biostability and biocompatibility, has not yet been popular with most neurosurgeons. The purpose of this paper is to describe three kinds of prosthetic devices made of porous hydroxyapatite ceramics that we have found useful in neurosurgical practice.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D009493 Neurosurgery A surgical specialty concerned with the treatment of diseases and disorders of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral and sympathetic nervous system. Neurosurgeries
D002130 Calcium Phosphates Calcium salts of phosphoric acid. These compounds are frequently used as calcium supplements. Phosphates, Calcium
D002516 Ceramics Products made by baking or firing nonmetallic minerals (clay and similar materials). In making dental restorations or parts of restorations the material is fused porcelain. (From McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 4th ed & Boucher's Clinical Dental Terminology, 4th ed) Ceramic
D003399 Craniotomy Surgical incision into the cranium. Craniectomy,Craniectomies,Craniotomies

D006882 Hydroxyapatites A group of compounds with the general formula M10(PO4)6(OH)2, where M is barium, strontium, or calcium. The compounds are the principal mineral in phosphorite deposits, biological tissue, human bones, and teeth. They are also used as an anticaking agent and polymer catalysts. D019736 Prostheses and Implants Artificial substitutes for body parts, and materials inserted into tissue for functional, cosmetic, or therapeutic purposes. Prostheses can be functional, as in the case of artificial arms and legs, or cosmetic, as in the case of an artificial eye. Implants, all surgically inserted or grafted into the body, tend to be used therapeutically. IMPLANTS, EXPERIMENTAL is available for those used experimentally.
