Mucus secretion in hypertrophic, hypersecretory, protein-losing gastropathy. 1985

M Kristensen, and T Nilsson

A 48-year-old man presented with giant folds of the gastric mucosa, hypoalbuminemia, and hypersecretion of acid. In vivo labeling of plasma proteins by 51CrCl3 disclosed an abnormal gastric protein clearance. Mucus secretion, evaluated by the output of dry matter, mucosubstance constituents (hexosamine and fucose), protein (by the method of Lowry), and sodium were five to eight times those in nine healthy volunteers, but were normalized by the histamine-H2-receptor antagonist cimetidine. The proportion of dry matter and protein was the same in the patient and in healthy subjects, indicating that the loss of plasma protein into the stomach probably occurred as part of an abnormally great secretion of mucus.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008297 Male Males
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D009093 Mucus The viscous secretion of mucous membranes. It contains mucin, white blood cells, water, inorganic salts, and exfoliated cells.
D011506 Proteins Linear POLYPEPTIDES that are synthesized on RIBOSOMES and may be further modified, crosslinked, cleaved, or assembled into complex proteins with several subunits. The specific sequence of AMINO ACIDS determines the shape the polypeptide will take, during PROTEIN FOLDING, and the function of the protein. D002927 Cimetidine A histamine congener, it competitively inhibits HISTAMINE binding to HISTAMINE H2 RECEPTORS. Cimetidine has a range of pharmacological actions. It inhibits GASTRIC ACID secretion, as well as PEPSIN and GASTRIN output. D005643 Fucose A six-member ring deoxysugar with the chemical formula C6H12O5. It lacks a hydroxyl group on the carbon at position 6 of the molecule. Deoxygalactose,alpha-Fucose,alpha Fucose
D005750 Gastric Juice The liquid secretion of the stomach mucosa consisting of hydrochloric acid (GASTRIC ACID); PEPSINOGENS; INTRINSIC FACTOR; GASTRIN; MUCUS; and the bicarbonate ion (BICARBONATES). D005756 Gastritis Inflammation of the GASTRIC MUCOSA, a lesion observed in a number of unrelated disorders. Gastritides
D005758 Gastritis, Hypertrophic GASTRITIS with HYPERTROPHY of the GASTRIC MUCOSA. It is characterized by giant gastric folds, diminished acid secretion, excessive MUCUS secretion, and HYPOPROTEINEMIA. Symptoms include VOMITING; DIARRHEA; and WEIGHT LOSS.
