Intrapetrous neurinomas of the facial nerve. Report of three cases. 1985

T Murata, and A Hakuba, and T Okumura, and K Mori

Three cases of intrapetrous neurinomas of the facial nerve are reported and their diagnostic and surgical problems are discussed. Two of them revealed rare intracranial extensions and the other was a typical intrapetrous expansion of the tumor. The literature of intracranial neurinomas of the facial nerve is reviewed in detail.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D009442 Neurilemmoma A neoplasm that arises from SCHWANN CELLS of the cranial, peripheral, and autonomic nerves. Clinically, these tumors may present as a cranial neuropathy, abdominal or soft tissue mass, intracranial lesion, or with spinal cord compression. Histologically, these tumors are encapsulated, highly vascular, and composed of a homogenous pattern of biphasic fusiform-shaped cells that may have a palisaded appearance. D005154 Facial Nerve The 7th cranial nerve. The facial nerve has two parts, the larger motor root which may be called the facial nerve proper, and the smaller intermediate or sensory root. Together they provide efferent innervation to the muscles of facial expression and to the lacrimal and SALIVARY GLANDS, and convey afferent information for TASTE from the anterior two-thirds of the TONGUE and for TOUCH from the EXTERNAL EAR.
