[Results of home assisted ventilation of non-paralytic and tracheostomized chronic respiratory insufficient patients (author's transl)]. 1979

D Robert, and B Chemorin, and M Gérard, and G Fournier, and L Thomas, and C Bernard, and A Bertoye

The following results have been obtained from a study of 118 tracheostomized patients ventilated at home: --Survival on the whole is generally prolonged. --The prognosis of tracheostomized subjects with restrictive syndrome is totally modified in length and quality when the patients are ventilated. --In the case of obstructive syndrome, the length and quality of survival are probably increased. However, it seems that assisted ventilation at home leads only to the disappearance of asphyxiating paroxysms and right cardiac failure. It does not seem to prevent the unrelenting evolution of the disease.

D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D011175 Positive-Pressure Respiration A method of mechanical ventilation in which pressure is maintained to increase the volume of gas remaining in the lungs at the end of expiration, thus reducing the shunting of blood through the lungs and improving gas exchange. D011379 Prognosis A prediction of the probable outcome of a disease based on a individual's condition and the usual course of the disease as seen in similar situations. Prognostic Factor,Prognostic Factors,Factor, Prognostic,Factors, Prognostic,Prognoses
D012131 Respiratory Insufficiency Failure to adequately provide oxygen to cells of the body and to remove excess carbon dioxide from them. D006333 Heart Failure A heterogeneous condition in which the heart is unable to pump out sufficient blood to meet the metabolic need of the body. Heart failure can be caused by structural defects, functional abnormalities (VENTRICULAR DYSFUNCTION), or a sudden overload beyond its capacity. Chronic heart failure is more common than acute heart failure which results from sudden insult to cardiac function, such as MYOCARDIAL INFARCTION. D006701 Home Nursing Nursing care given to an individual in the home. The care may be provided by a family member or a friend. Home nursing as care by a non-professional is differentiated from HOME CARE SERVICES provided by professionals: visiting nurse, home health agencies, hospital, or other organized community group.
