[Long-term survival following neuroblastoma stage IV--a case report]. 1985

C Eschenbach, and P Gutjahr

A 12 1/2 months old girl with stage IV-neuroblastoma presented with a retroperitoneal primary and tumor infiltrations of the urinary bladder. She had multiple osseous metastases, unilateral orbital infiltrations and medullary tumor cell seeds. Treatment was exclusively chemotherapeutic. The primary tumour and the metastases regressed completely. Extensive calcifications resulted, and they slowly disappeared over a period of three years. The girl remains free of tumour 6 1/2 years after diagnosis and initiation of therapy and 4 1/2 years after its completion.

D009447 Neuroblastoma A common neoplasm of early childhood arising from neural crest cells in the sympathetic nervous system, and characterized by diverse clinical behavior, ranging from spontaneous remission to rapid metastatic progression and death. This tumor is the most common intraabdominal malignancy of childhood, but it may also arise from thorax, neck, or rarely occur in the central nervous system. Histologic features include uniform round cells with hyperchromatic nuclei arranged in nests and separated by fibrovascular septa. Neuroblastomas may be associated with the opsoclonus-myoclonus syndrome. Red marrow is a hematopoietic tissue and is the site of production of erythrocytes and granular leukocytes. Bone marrow is made up of a framework of connective tissue containing branching fibers with the frame being filled with marrow cells.
