Affinity chromatography of human serum proteins using immobilized lectin from Allomyrina dichotoma. 1985

K Umetsu, and N Ikeda, and S Kashimura, and T Suzuki

The beta-D-galactoside-specific lectin from Allomyrina dichotoma reacts with serum proteins which contain the corresponding carbohydrate moieties. By affinity chromatography of human serum using the insolubilized lectin coupled to Sepharose, it is possible to fractionate human serum proteins in 2 groups: those which react with the lectin (alpha 1-acid glycoprotein, haptoglobin, etc.) and those which do not (albumin, Gc-globulin, etc.). IgG is the only serum protein that can be found in both groups.

D002846 Chromatography, Affinity A chromatographic technique that utilizes the ability of biological molecules, often ANTIBODIES, to bind to certain ligands specifically and reversibly. It is used in protein biochemistry. D001517 Coleoptera Order of winged insects also known as beetles comprising over 350,000 species in 150 families. They possess hard bodies with mouthparts adapted for chewing. Beetles,Beetle
D037102 Lectins Proteins that share the common characteristic of binding to carbohydrates. Some ANTIBODIES and carbohydrate-metabolizing proteins (ENZYMES) also bind to carbohydrates, however they are not considered lectins. PLANT LECTINS are carbohydrate-binding proteins that have been primarily identified by their hemagglutinating activity (HEMAGGLUTININS). However, a variety of lectins occur in animal species where they serve diverse array of functions through specific carbohydrate recognition.
