Decreased number of cells in the inferior olivary nucleus of the developing staggerer mouse. 1985

H Shojaeian, and N Delhaye-Bouchaud, and J Mariani

Light-microscopic study and cell counts of the inferior olivary nucleus (ION) were performed in staggerer mutant mice and compared to those obtained in C57B16J controls. The main result is that 60% of the olivary cells are missing in 24-day-old mutants and that most of the deficit is already present on postnatal day 10. It has been previously shown that the staggerer gene exerts an intrinsic effect on the Purkinje cells. Whether cells of the inferior olive are, in addition to Purkinje cells, a primary site of gene action, or whether they are retrogradely affected by the cerebellar malformation, remains unknown from the present study.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008810 Mice, Inbred C57BL One of the first INBRED MOUSE STRAINS to be sequenced. This strain is commonly used as genetic background for transgenic mouse models. Refractory to many tumors, this strain is also preferred model for studying role of genetic variations in development of diseases. D009847 Olivary Nucleus A brainstem nuclear complex. in the hindbrain, also referred to as the olivary body. The olivary nuclear complex is a part of the MEDULLA OBLONGATA and the PONTINE TEGMENTUM. It is involved with motor control and is a major source of sensory input to the CEREBELLUM. D002466 Cell Nucleolus Within most types of eukaryotic CELL NUCLEUS, a distinct region, not delimited by a membrane, in which some species of rRNA (RNA, RIBOSOMAL) are synthesized and assembled into ribonucleoprotein subunits of ribosomes. In the nucleolus rRNA is transcribed from a nucleolar organizer, i.e., a group of tandemly repeated chromosomal genes which encode rRNA and which are transcribed by RNA polymerase I. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
