Is the Amerlex free-thyroxine assay a useful screening test in the elderly? 1985

The results of screening 1140 acutely-ill elderly patients with the Amersham Amerlex FT4 assay are presented. Nonthyroidal illness was the commonest cause of abnormal results and we stress the importance of performing confirmatory tests in this group of patients.

D013974	Thyroxine	The major hormone derived from the thyroid gland. Thyroxine is synthesized via the iodination of tyrosines (MONOIODOTYROSINE) and the coupling of iodotyrosines (DIIODOTYROSINE) in the THYROGLOBULIN. Thyroxine is released from thyroglobulin by proteolysis and secreted into the blood.
