Meningitis and brain abscess due to Haemophilus paraphrophilus. 1985

A case of meningitis and brain abscess due to Haemophilus paraphrophilus in a patient with congenital heart disease is reported. The abscess communicated with the cerebral ventricular system. Although the infecting strain was found to be highly sensitive to ampicillin, the patient died despite appropriate antimicrobial therapy. Characteristics distinguishing Haemophilus paraphrophilus and related species are discussed.

The majority are caused by spread of infected material from a focus of suppuration elsewhere in the body, notably the PARANASAL SINUSES, middle ear (see EAR, MIDDLE); HEART (see also ENDOCARDITIS, BACTERIAL), and LUNG. Penetrating CRANIOCEREBRAL TRAUMA and NEUROSURGICAL PROCEDURES may also be associated with this condition. Clinical manifestations include HEADACHE; SEIZURES; focal neurologic deficits; and alterations of consciousness.
