An introduction to the changing field of mental handicap and to possible roles for the dietitian in this field illustrated with specific examples from clinical practice. The dietitian who specialises in mental handicap may work in both institutional and community settings and with all ages. Current views on prevention, treatment and rehabilitation are reviewed.
