Heavy-ion-induced cataractogenesis. 1977

C H Bonney, and D M Hunter, and G E Conley, and K A Hardy

Cataract formation following heavy ion exposure (O+8) was noted in three rhesus monkeys secondary to a study of retinal effects. The pathogenesis of these lens changes follows many, but not all, of the characteristics for "radiation cataracts." The ring-shaped opacity was not noted to occur. Posterior capsular changes were noted initially and followed through the formation of a mature cataract.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007908 Lens, Crystalline A transparent, biconvex structure of the EYE, enclosed in a capsule and situated behind the IRIS and in front of the vitreous humor (VITREOUS BODY). It is slightly overlapped at its margin by the ciliary processes. Adaptation by the CILIARY BODY is crucial for OCULAR ACCOMMODATION. Eye Lens,Lens, Eye,Crystalline Lens
D008253 Macaca mulatta A species of the genus MACACA inhabiting India, China, and other parts of Asia. The species is used extensively in biomedical research and adapts very well to living with humans. D011833 Radiation Injuries, Experimental Experimentally produced harmful effects of ionizing or non-ionizing RADIATION in CHORDATA animals. Experimental Radiation Injuries,Injuries, Experimental Radiation,Experimental Radiation Injury,Radiation Injury, Experimental
D002386 Cataract Partial or complete opacity on or in the lens or capsule of one or both eyes, impairing vision or causing blindness. The many kinds of cataract are classified by their morphology (size, shape, location) or etiology (cause and time of occurrence). D004780 Environment, Controlled A state in which the environs of hospitals, laboratories, domestic and animal housing, work places, spacecraft, and other surroundings are under technological control with regard to air conditioning, heating, lighting, humidity, ventilation, and other ambient features. The concept includes control of atmospheric composition. D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
