[Etiology, pathogenesis, clinical picture and treatment of spastic torticollis and other extrapyramidal hyperkinesis]. 1985

N I Komandenko, and M A Grabchuk, and A N Komandenko

The history, clinical picture and non-specific parameters of the restorative process were studied in 28 patients with spastic torticollis and in 7 patients with other extrapyramidal hyperkineses (EH). It was found that one of the most frequent causes of these disorders is a chronic encephalitis or the infectious-allergic process in the brain with the predominant damage to a number of extrapyramidal formations. The most optimum and effective method of EH therapy is repeated courses of dexamethasone treatment in combination with antibiotics, B and C vitamins and vasodilating drugs. If there are any foci of infection, their preliminary sanation is necessary.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D006967 Hypersensitivity Altered reactivity to an antigen, which can result in pathologic reactions upon subsequent exposure to that particular antigen. Allergy,Allergic Reaction,Allergic Reactions,Allergies,Hypersensitivities,Reaction, Allergic,Reactions, Allergic
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D009128 Muscle Spasticity A form of muscle hypertonia associated with upper MOTOR NEURON DISEASE. Resistance to passive stretch of a spastic muscle results in minimal initial resistance (a "free interval") followed by an incremental increase in muscle tone. Tone increases in proportion to the velocity of stretch. Spasticity is usually accompanied by HYPERREFLEXIA and variable degrees of MUSCLE WEAKNESS. D002908 Chronic Disease Diseases which have one or more of the following characteristics: they are permanent, leave residual disability, are caused by nonreversible pathological alteration, require special training of the patient for rehabilitation, or may be expected to require a long period of supervision, observation, or care (Dictionary of Health Services Management, 2d ed). For epidemiological studies chronic disease often includes HEART DISEASES; STROKE; CANCER; and diabetes (DIABETES MELLITUS, TYPE 2). D004660 Encephalitis Inflammation of the BRAIN due to infection, autoimmune processes, toxins, and other conditions. Viral infections (see ENCEPHALITIS, VIRAL) are a relatively frequent cause of this condition. D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
