[Management of recurrent herpes simplex using levamisole]. 1979

C Luderschmidt, and H H Wolff

The therapeutic effect of levamisole was tested in a double blind and open clinical study in 30 patients with recurrent labial and genital herpes simplex. The frequency, the duration and the painfulness of the herpes eruptions were improved significantly under levamisole treatment. Agranulocytosis is an important adverse reaction which restricts the practical use of the substance. The increase of phagocytosis of granulocytes and macrophages and the normalization of defective cell mediated immune reactions are the supposed mechanisms of levamisole action.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007978 Levamisole An antihelminthic drug that has been tried experimentally in rheumatic disorders where it apparently restores the immune response by increasing macrophage chemotaxis and T-lymphocyte function. Paradoxically, this immune enhancement appears to be beneficial in rheumatoid arthritis where dermatitis, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia, and nausea and vomiting have been reported as side effects. D006561 Herpes Simplex A group of acute infections caused by herpes simplex virus type 1 or type 2 that is characterized by the development of one or more small fluid-filled vesicles with a raised erythematous base on the skin or mucous membrane. It occurs as a primary infection or recurs due to a reactivation of a latent infection. (Dorland, 27th ed.) Herpes Simplex Virus Infection
