C14-proline metabolism in alloxan treated rats. 1970

R G Brown, and E P Liddy

The metabolism of C(14) proline was studied for a brief incorporation period during the early phases of alloxan treatment. The study showed that 150 gm alloxan-diabetic rats excreted a large quantity of prolyl rich peptides in the urine which is indicative of a failure in hydroxylation in the diabetic animals. The data from the skin confirmed this. Possible explanations were presented.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D010455 Peptides Members of the class of compounds composed of AMINO ACIDS joined together by peptide bonds between adjacent amino acids into linear, branched or cyclical structures. OLIGOPEPTIDES are composed of approximately 2-12 amino acids. Polypeptides are composed of approximately 13 or more amino acids. PROTEINS are considered to be larger versions of peptides that can form into complex structures such as ENZYMES and RECEPTORS. Peptide,Polypeptide,Polypeptides
D011392 Proline A non-essential amino acid that is synthesized from GLUTAMIC ACID. It is an essential component of COLLAGEN and is important for proper functioning of joints and tendons. L-Proline,L Proline
D002247 Carbon Isotopes Stable carbon atoms that have the same atomic number as the element carbon but differ in atomic weight. C-13 is a stable carbon isotope. Carbon Isotope,Isotope, Carbon,Isotopes, Carbon
D003921 Diabetes Mellitus, Experimental Diabetes mellitus induced experimentally by administration of various diabetogenic agents or by PANCREATECTOMY. D006909 Hydroxyproline A hydroxylated form of the imino acid proline. A deficiency in ASCORBIC ACID can result in impaired hydroxyproline formation. Oxyproline,4-Hydroxyproline,cis-4-Hydroxyproline,4 Hydroxyproline, cis 4 Hydroxyproline
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
