Child molestation. 1979

R A Sullivan, and J L Schaefer, and F L Goldstein

Sexually molested children are thought to be more common than battered children but, like rape, cases of child molestation are greatly underreported. Physical trauma occurs frequently, including vaginoperineal tears and head injuries. The child's father is frequently the offender. In nearly one-half of the cases, the abuse occurs repeatedly. Physicians must be aware of the potential physical and emotional damage and must be prepared to offer gentle care, effective support and appropriate counseling.
