Susceptibility of gram-negative aerobic bacilli resistant to carbenicillin in a general hospital to piperacillin and ticarcillin. 1979

J E McGowan, and P M Terry

During an 8-month period, 858 gram-negative aerobic rods resistant to carbenicillin (minimum inhibitory concentration, >/=128 mug/ml) were isolated. Susceptibility testing of 233 of these suggested that piperacillin might be active against more of these organisms than would carbenicillin or ticarcillin.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008826 Microbial Sensitivity Tests Any tests that demonstrate the relative efficacy of different chemotherapeutic agents against specific microorganisms (i.e., bacteria, fungi, viruses). D010403 Penicillin Resistance Nonsusceptibility of an organism to the action of penicillins. Penicillin Resistances,Resistance, Penicillin,Resistances, Penicillin
D010406 Penicillins A group of antibiotics that contain 6-aminopenicillanic acid with a side chain attached to the 6-amino group. The penicillin nucleus is the chief structural requirement for biological activity. The side-chain structure determines many of the antibacterial and pharmacological characteristics. D002228 Carbenicillin Broad-spectrum semisynthetic penicillin derivative used parenterally. It is susceptible to gastric juice and penicillinase and may damage platelet function. D006088 Gram-Negative Aerobic Bacteria A large group of aerobic bacteria which show up as pink (negative) when treated by the gram-staining method. This is because the cell walls of gram-negative bacteria are low in peptidoglycan and thus have low affinity for violet stain and high affinity for the pink dye safranine. Achromatiaceae,Achromatium,Achromobacteriaceae,Gram Negative Aerobic Bacteria
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D001407 Bacillus A genus of BACILLACEAE that are spore-forming, rod-shaped cells. Most species are saprophytic soil forms with only a few species being pathogenic. Bacillus bacterium
D013982 Ticarcillin An antibiotic derived from penicillin similar to CARBENICILLIN in action. BRL-2288,Tarcil,Ticar,Ticarcillin Disodium,Ticarpen,Ticillin,BRL 2288,BRL2288,Disodium, Ticarcillin
