The author presents an analysis of the data on 94 patients with cancer of the gastric cardiac portion with and without the involvement of the esophagus, in whom radical operations (proximal gastric resection and gastrectomy) were followed by various complications. The main complications and causes of patients' death were pleuropulmonary complications and peritonitis. Peritonitis was more frequently due to the anastomosis suture incompetency. Peritonitis resulted in the postoperative mortality totally in 50% of patients. Suture incompetency of entero-esophageal anastomoses was as frequent as that of gastro-esophageal ones.
