High counting rates from 125I in radioimmunoassays. 1974

T K Bell

Responses from one manual and four automatic gamma counters for assaying (125)I were compared. The resolution times quoted by manufacturers when applied in a standardized correction formula to obtain true counts from observed counting rates above 10(4) counts per second appeared to be inadequate. The need to investigate the errors associated with high counting rates for all instruments and electronic settings employed to determine (125)I in radioimmunoassays is emphasized.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007457 Iodine Radioisotopes Unstable isotopes of iodine that decay or disintegrate emitting radiation. I atoms with atomic weights 117-139, except I 127, are radioactive iodine isotopes. Radioisotopes, Iodine
D008433 Mathematics The deductive study of shape, quantity, and dependence. (From McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 6th ed) Mathematic
D011863 Radioimmunoassay Classic quantitative assay for detection of antigen-antibody reactions using a radioactively labeled substance (radioligand) either directly or indirectly to measure the binding of the unlabeled substance to a specific antibody or other receptor system. Non-immunogenic substances (e.g., haptens) can be measured if coupled to larger carrier proteins (e.g., bovine gamma-globulin or human serum albumin) capable of inducing antibody formation. Radioimmunoassays
D011874 Radiometry The measurement of radiation by photography, as in x-ray film and film badge, by Geiger-Mueller tube, and by SCINTILLATION COUNTING. D006207 Half-Life The time it takes for a substance (drug, radioactive nuclide, or other) to lose half of its pharmacologic, physiologic, or radiologic activity. Halflife,Half Life,Half-Lifes,Halflifes
D012588 Scintillation Counting Detection and counting of scintillations produced in a fluorescent material by ionizing radiation. Scintillation Counters,Counter, Scintillation,Counters, Scintillation,Counting, Scintillation,Scintillation Counter
D012996 Solutions The homogeneous mixtures formed by the mixing of a solid, liquid, or gaseous substance (solute) with a liquid (the solvent), from which the dissolved substances can be recovered by physical processes. (From Grant & Hackh's Chemical Dictionary, 5th ed) Solution
