NN'-diacetylchitobiase activity in Tay-Sachs disease and Sandhoff's disease. 1974

J L Stirling

In Tay-Sachs disease and Sandhoff's disease respectively, one of the N-acetyl-beta-hexosaminidases (form A) or both (forms A and B) are absent, but glycosaminoglycans containing N-acetylhexosamines are not accumulated. The presence of NN'-diacetylchitobiase in livers from patients with these diseases raises the possibility that this new enzyme is involved in the metabolism of glycosaminoglycans rather than the enzymes previously described.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008064 Lipidoses Conditions characterized by abnormal lipid deposition due to disturbance in lipid metabolism, such as hereditary diseases involving lysosomal enzymes required for lipid breakdown. They are classified either by the enzyme defect or by the type of lipid involved. Lipidosis,Lipoidosis
D008099 Liver A large lobed glandular organ in the abdomen of vertebrates that is responsible for detoxification, metabolism, synthesis and storage of various substances. Livers
D002498 Centrifugation Process of using a rotating machine to generate centrifugal force to separate substances of different densities, remove moisture, or simulate gravitational effects. It employs a large motor-driven apparatus with a long arm, at the end of which human and animal subjects, biological specimens, or equipment can be revolved and rotated at various speeds to study gravitational effects. D002855 Chromatography, Thin Layer Chromatography on thin layers of adsorbents rather than in columns. The adsorbent can be alumina, silica gel, silicates, charcoals, or cellulose. D006025 Glycosaminoglycans Heteropolysaccharides which contain an N-acetylated hexosamine in a characteristic repeating disaccharide unit. The repeating structure of each disaccharide involves alternate 1,4- and 1,3-linkages consisting of either N-acetylglucosamine (see ACETYLGLUCOSAMINE) or N-acetylgalactosamine (see ACETYLGALACTOSAMINE). Glycosaminoglycan,Mucopolysaccharides
D006596 Hexosaminidases Enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of N-acylhexosamine residues in N-acylhexosamides. Hexosaminidases also act on GLUCOSIDES; GALACTOSIDES; and several OLIGOSACCHARIDES. Galactosaminidases,Hexosaminidase,Galactosaminidase,Glucosaminidase,Glucosaminidases
