Evidence for the periplasmic location of hydrogenase in Desulfovibrio gigas. 1974

G R Bell, and L LeGall, and H D Peck

Hydrogenase has been found to be located in the periplasmic space of Desulfovibrio gigas, and it is proposed that hydrogenase plays an important and specific role in interspecies hydrogen transfer.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D009996 Osmotic Fragility RED BLOOD CELL sensitivity to change in OSMOTIC PRESSURE. When exposed to a hypotonic concentration of sodium in a solution, red cells take in more water, swell until the capacity of the cell membrane is exceeded, and burst. Saline Fragility,Fragility, Osmotic,Fragility, Saline
D010088 Oxidoreductases The class of all enzymes catalyzing oxidoreduction reactions. The substrate that is oxidized is regarded as a hydrogen donor. The systematic name is based on donor:acceptor oxidoreductase. The recommended name will be dehydrogenase, wherever this is possible; as an alternative, reductase can be used. Oxidase is only used in cases where O2 is the acceptor. (Enzyme Nomenclature, 1992, p9) Dehydrogenases,Oxidases,Oxidoreductase,Reductases,Dehydrogenase,Oxidase,Reductase
D002458 Cell Fractionation Techniques to partition various components of the cell into SUBCELLULAR FRACTIONS. Cell Fractionations,Fractionation, Cell,Fractionations, Cell
D003470 Culture Media Any liquid or solid preparation made specifically for the growth, storage, or transport of microorganisms or other types of cells. The variety of media that exist allow for the culturing of specific microorganisms and cell types, such as differential media, selective media, test media, and defined media. Solid media consist of liquid media that have been solidified with an agent such as AGAR or GELATIN. Media, Culture
D003901 Desulfovibrio A genus of gram-negative, anaerobic, rod-shaped bacteria capable of reducing sulfur compounds to hydrogen sulfide. Organisms are isolated from anaerobic mud of fresh and salt water, animal intestines, manure, and feces.
D001426 Bacterial Proteins Proteins found in any species of bacterium. D013104 Spheroplasts Cells, usually bacteria or yeast, which have partially lost their cell wall, lost their characteristic shape and become round. Spheroplast
D013447 Sulfites Inorganic salts of sulfurous acid. Sulfite,Sulfites, Inorganic,Inorganic Sulfites
D013997 Time Factors Elements of limited time intervals, contributing to particular results or situations. Time Series,Factor, Time,Time Factor
