The hypoglycaemic effect of 5-hydroxytryptophan. 1974

B L Furman

1 In nialamide-treated mice, L-5-hydroxytryptophan produced a dose-dependent hypoglycaemic response which was independent of whether the animals had been fed or fasted.2 This response was accompanied by a head-twitching response which was also dose-dependent.3 The hypoglycaemic response was not accompanied by an elevation in plasma immunoreactive insulin levels and was fully manifest in alloxan diabetic animals.4 5-Hydroxytryptophan did not increase the in vitro glucose uptake of adipose tissue or skeletal muscle, either on incubation of the tissues in contact with the drug or on incubation of tissues removed from mice injected with the drug.5 Both the hypoglycaemic and head-twitching responses were prevented by pretreatment with methysergide or cyproheptadine and augmented by mepyramine treatment.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007328 Insulin A 51-amino acid pancreatic hormone that plays a major role in the regulation of glucose metabolism, directly by suppressing endogenous glucose production (GLYCOGENOLYSIS; GLUCONEOGENESIS) and indirectly by suppressing GLUCAGON secretion and LIPOLYSIS. Native insulin is a globular protein comprised of a zinc-coordinated hexamer. Each insulin monomer containing two chains, A (21 residues) and B (30 residues), linked by two disulfide bonds. Insulin is used as a drug to control insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (DIABETES MELLITUS, TYPE 1). D007330 Insulin Antibodies Antibodies specific to INSULIN. Antibodies, Insulin
D008297 Male Males
D008784 Methysergide An ergot derivative that is a congener of LYSERGIC ACID DIETHYLAMIDE. It antagonizes the effects of serotonin in blood vessels and gastrointestinal smooth muscle, but has few of the properties of other ergot alkaloids. Methysergide is used prophylactically in migraine and other vascular headaches and to antagonize serotonin in the carcinoid syndrome. D009068 Movement The act, process, or result of passing from one place or position to another. It differs from LOCOMOTION in that locomotion is restricted to the passing of the whole body from one place to another, while movement encompasses both locomotion but also a change of the position of the whole body or any of its parts. Movement may be used with reference to humans, vertebrate and invertebrate animals, and microorganisms. Differentiate also from MOTOR ACTIVITY, movement associated with behavior. Movements
D009132 Muscles Contractile tissue that produces movement in animals. Muscle Tissue,Muscle,Muscle Tissues,Tissue, Muscle,Tissues, Muscle
D009526 Nialamide An MAO inhibitor that is used as an antidepressive agent.
D011738 Pyrilamine A histamine H1 antagonist. It has mild hypnotic properties and some local anesthetic action and is used for allergies (including skin eruptions) both parenterally and locally. It is a common ingredient of cold remedies. Mepyramine,Pyranisamine,Anthisan,Boots Bite & Sting Relief,Kriptin,Mepyramine Maleate,Pyrilamine Maleate,Maleate, Mepyramine,Maleate, Pyrilamine
