Effect of stress during labor on the concentration of cortisol and estriol in maternal plasma. 1979

J M Maltau, and O V Eielsen, and K T Stokke

The effect of stress during labor on the plasma concentration of cortisol, unconjugated estriol, and human chorionic somatomammotropin was studied in 15 healthy primiparous women. According to the method of pain relief the parturients were divided into two groups. One group was given continuous epidural analgesia and the other group received pethidine, diazepam, and nitrous oxide/oxygen in response to pain. In the most stressed nonepidural group there was a significant rise in the cortisol level during labor and the estriol concentration fell significantly. In the epidural group no significant changes were observed with respect to the concentration of either cortisol or estriol. These results give further support to the hypothesis that severe maternal stress may lead to a reduced concentration of estriol in maternal plasma.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007744 Obstetric Labor Complications Medical problems associated with OBSTETRIC LABOR, such as BREECH PRESENTATION; PREMATURE OBSTETRIC LABOR; HEMORRHAGE; or others. These complications can affect the well-being of the mother, the FETUS, or both. D008614 Meperidine A narcotic analgesic that can be used for the relief of most types of moderate to severe pain, including postoperative pain and the pain of labor. Prolonged use may lead to dependence of the morphine type; withdrawal symptoms appear more rapidly than with morphine and are of shorter duration. Isonipecain,Pethidine,Demerol,Dolantin,Dolargan,Dolcontral,Dolin,Dolosal,Dolsin,Lidol,Lydol,Meperidine Hydrochloride,Operidine EPJ-I,Operidine EPJ I
D009609 Nitrous Oxide Nitrogen oxide (N2O). A colorless, odorless gas that is used as an anesthetic and analgesic. High concentrations cause a narcotic effect and may replace oxygen, causing death by asphyxia. It is also used as a food aerosol in the preparation of whipping cream. Laughing Gas,Nitrogen Protoxide,Gas, Laughing,Oxide, Nitrous
D010100 Oxygen An element with atomic symbol O, atomic number 8, and atomic weight [15.99903; 15.99977]. It is the most abundant element on earth and essential for respiration. Dioxygen,Oxygen-16,Oxygen 16
D010928 Placental Lactogen A polypeptide hormone of approximately 25 kDa that is produced by the SYNCYTIOTROPHOBLASTS of the PLACENTA, also known as chorionic somatomammotropin. It has both GROWTH HORMONE and PROLACTIN activities on growth, lactation, and luteal steroid production. In women, placental lactogen secretion begins soon after implantation and increases to 1 g or more a day in late pregnancy. Placental lactogen is also an insulin antagonist. D011247 Pregnancy The status during which female mammals carry their developing young (EMBRYOS or FETUSES) in utero before birth, beginning from FERTILIZATION to BIRTH. Gestation,Pregnancies
D003975 Diazepam A benzodiazepine with anticonvulsant, anxiolytic, sedative, muscle relaxant, and amnesic properties and a long duration of action. Its actions are mediated by enhancement of GAMMA-AMINOBUTYRIC ACID activity. 7-Chloro-1,3-dihydro-1-methyl-5-phenyl-2H-1,4-benzodiazepin-2-one,Apaurin,Diazemuls,Faustan,Relanium,Seduxen,Sibazon,Stesolid,Valium
D004824 Epidural Space Space between the dura mater and the walls of the vertebral canal. Epidural Spaces,Space, Epidural,Spaces, Epidural
D004964 Estriol A hydroxylated metabolite of ESTRADIOL or ESTRONE that has a hydroxyl group at C3, 16-alpha, and 17-beta position. Estriol is a major urinary estrogen. During PREGNANCY, a large amount of estriol is produced by the PLACENTA. Isomers with inversion of the hydroxyl group or groups are called epiestriol.
