Thyroid gland and epididymal function in rats--histological study. 1979

A G del Rio, and C L Valdez Toledo, and M C Quiros

An experiment was designed to determine the relation between the hypofunction of the thyroid gland and the structure of the epididymis. The hypothyroid condition was associated with decreased mitosis, insufficient vascularization, decreased nuclear size, and chromatin decondensation. In thyroidectomized rats injected with T3, no morphological changes in the epididymis were observed.

D002196 Capillaries The minute vessels that connect arterioles and venules. Capillary Beds,Sinusoidal Beds,Sinusoids,Bed, Sinusoidal,Beds, Sinusoidal,Capillary,Capillary Bed,Sinusoid,Sinusoidal Bed
D004822 Epididymis The convoluted cordlike structure attached to the posterior of the TESTIS. Epididymis consists of the head (caput), the body (corpus), and the tail (cauda). A network of ducts leaving the testis joins into a common epididymal tubule proper which provides the transport, storage, and maturation of SPERMATOZOA.
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA. D013961 Thyroid Gland A highly vascularized endocrine gland consisting of two lobes joined by a thin band of tissue with one lobe on each side of the TRACHEA. It secretes THYROID HORMONES from the follicular cells and CALCITONIN from the parafollicular cells thereby regulating METABOLISM and CALCIUM level in blood, respectively. D013965 Thyroidectomy Surgical removal of the thyroid gland. (Dorland, 28th ed) Thyroidectomies
D014284 Triiodothyronine A T3 thyroid hormone normally synthesized and secreted by the thyroid gland in much smaller quantities than thyroxine (T4). Most T3 is derived from peripheral monodeiodination of T4 at the 5' position of the outer ring of the iodothyronine nucleus. The hormone finally delivered and used by the tissues is mainly T3.
