The distribution of sorbitol dehydrogenase in embryonic and adult chicken tissues. 1979

S P DeFabro, and D W Bishop, and A L Goldemberg

Sorbitol dehydrogenase activity (SDH) has been determined in various organs of embryonic and adult chickens. SDH is present in 24-hour embryos, and its activity continues to rise during the next 48 hours. During embryonic development and after hatching, regional differences in SDH activity are demonstrable in the organs of the animal. These differences concern both level of enzyme activity and temporal changes with development. No correlation could be established between enzymatic activity and the fructose concentration of the organs studied.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007064 L-Iditol 2-Dehydrogenase An alcohol oxidoreductase which catalyzes the oxidation of L-iditol to L-sorbose in the presence of NAD. It also acts on D-glucitol to form D-fructose. It also acts on other closely related sugar alcohols to form the corresponding sugar. EC 1.1.1.14 Iditol Dehydrogenase,Sorbitol Dehydrogenase,Polyol Dehydrogenase,2-Dehydrogenase, L-Iditol,Dehydrogenase, Iditol,Dehydrogenase, Polyol,Dehydrogenase, Sorbitol,L Iditol 2 Dehydrogenase
D007422 Intestines The section of the alimentary canal from the STOMACH to the ANAL CANAL. It includes the LARGE INTESTINE and SMALL INTESTINE. Intestine
D007668 Kidney Body organ that filters blood for the secretion of URINE and that regulates ion concentrations. Kidneys
D008099 Liver A large lobed glandular organ in the abdomen of vertebrates that is responsible for detoxification, metabolism, synthesis and storage of various substances. Livers
D009206 Myocardium The muscle tissue of the HEART. It is composed of striated, involuntary muscle cells (MYOCYTES, CARDIAC) connected to form the contractile pump to generate blood flow. D002642 Chick Embryo The developmental entity of a fertilized chicken egg (ZYGOTE). The developmental process begins about 24 h before the egg is laid at the BLASTODISC, a small whitish spot on the surface of the EGG YOLK. After 21 days of incubation, the embryo is fully developed before hatching. Embryo, Chick,Chick Embryos,Embryos, Chick
D002645 Chickens Common name for the species Gallus gallus, the domestic fowl, in the family Phasianidae, order GALLIFORMES. It is descended from the red jungle fowl of SOUTHEAST ASIA. Gallus gallus,Gallus domesticus,Gallus gallus domesticus,Chicken
D005632 Fructose A monosaccharide in sweet fruits and honey that is soluble in water, alcohol, or ether. It is used as a preservative and an intravenous infusion in parenteral feeding. D000482 Allantois An extra-embryonic membranous sac derived from the YOLK SAC of REPTILES; BIRDS; and MAMMALS. It lies between two other extra-embryonic membranes, the AMNION and the CHORION. The allantois serves to store urinary wastes and mediate exchange of gas and nutrients for the developing embryo. Allantoic Membrane,Membrane, Allantoic
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
