Influenza-associated myoglobinuric renal failure. 1979

E Cunningham, and R Kohli, and R C Venuto

Acute myoglobinuric renal failure developed in three patients during the course of influenza virus infection. Muscle enzyme levels were elevated in all patients. Myoglobin was detected in the urine or serum by immunodiffusion. Recent influenza infection was documented by elevated hemagglutination inhibition titers. One patient died, whereas the remaining two patients completely recovered renal function. These patients with influenza infection represented more than half of the cases of myoglobinuric renal failure seen on the medical services of the study institutions during ths same period. These observations suggest that the association between influenza infection and myoglobinuric renal failure may be more common than previously suspected.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007251 Influenza, Human An acute viral infection in humans involving the respiratory tract. It is marked by inflammation of the NASAL MUCOSA; the PHARYNX; and conjunctiva, and by headache and severe, often generalized, myalgia. D007770 L-Lactate Dehydrogenase A tetrameric enzyme that, along with the coenzyme NAD+, catalyzes the interconversion of LACTATE and PYRUVATE. In vertebrates, genes for three different subunits (LDH-A, LDH-B and LDH-C) exist. Lactate Dehydrogenase,Dehydrogenase, L-Lactate,Dehydrogenase, Lactate,L Lactate Dehydrogenase
D008875 Middle Aged An adult aged 45 - 64 years. Middle Age
D009132 Muscles Contractile tissue that produces movement in animals. Muscle Tissue,Muscle,Muscle Tissues,Tissue, Muscle,Tissues, Muscle
D009211 Myoglobin A conjugated protein which is the oxygen-transporting pigment of muscle. It is made up of one globin polypeptide chain and one heme group.
D009212 Myoglobinuria The presence of MYOGLOBIN in URINE usually as a result of rhabdomyolysis. Myoglobinurias
D009846 Oliguria Decreased URINE output that is below the normal range. Oliguria can be defined as urine output of less than or equal to 0.5 or 1 ml/kg/hr depending on the age. Oligurias
D003402 Creatine Kinase A transferase that catalyzes formation of PHOSPHOCREATINE from ATP + CREATINE. The reaction stores ATP energy as phosphocreatine. Three cytoplasmic ISOENZYMES have been identified in human tissues: the MM type from SKELETAL MUSCLE, the MB type from myocardial tissue and the BB type from nervous tissue as well as a mitochondrial isoenzyme. Macro-creatine kinase refers to creatine kinase complexed with other serum proteins.
