The reduction of 5 alpha-cholestan-3-one and 5 beta-cholestan-3-one by some boranes and hydroborates. 1979

R Contreras, and L Mendoza

This paper describes the high yield synthesis of 5 alpha-cholestan-3 alpha-ol and 5 beta-cholestan-3 beta-ol by the reduction of 5 alpha- and 5 beta-cholestan-3-one using using potassium and lithium-tri-sec-butyl-hydroborates as reducing reagents. Attempts to obtain the same alcohols using other bulky boranes resulted in the equatorial products.

D008722 Methods A series of steps taken in order to conduct research. Techniques,Methodological Studies,Methodological Study,Procedures,Studies, Methodological,Study, Methodological,Method,Procedure,Technique
D010084 Oxidation-Reduction A chemical reaction in which an electron is transferred from one molecule to another. The electron-donating molecule is the reducing agent or reductant; the electron-accepting molecule is the oxidizing agent or oxidant. Reducing and oxidizing agents function as conjugate reductant-oxidant pairs or redox pairs (Lehninger, Principles of Biochemistry, 1982, p471). Redox,Oxidation Reduction
D001880 Boranes The collective name for the boron hydrides, which are analogous to the alkanes and silanes. Numerous boranes are known. Some have high calorific values and are used in high-energy fuels. (From Grant & Hackh's Chemical Dictionary, 5th ed) Borane,Boron Hydride,Boron Hydrides,Hydride, Boron,Hydrides, Boron
D001894 Borohydrides A class of inorganic or organic compounds that contain the borohydride (BH4-) anion. Borohydride
D002776 Cholestanes Derivatives of the saturated steroid cholestane with methyl groups at C-18 and C-19 and an iso-octyl side chain at C-17.
D002777 Cholestanols Cholestanes substituted in any position with one or more hydroxy groups. They are found in feces and bile. In contrast to bile acids and salts, they are not reabsorbed. Bile Alcohol,Bile Alcohols,Hydroxycholestane,Hydroxycholestanes,Alcohol, Bile,Alcohols, Bile
D002778 Cholestanones CHOLESTANES substituted with any number of keto groups.
