Microchromatographic quantitation of fetal hemoglobin in patients with sickle cell disease. 1979

E C Abraham, and J Carver, and J Döbler, and P F Milner, and T H Huisman

A microchromatographic procedure (Isolab Fast Hb Test System) which was developed for the quantitation of Hb AI (10) has been found useful for the quantitation of Hb F in samples that contain Hb S and/or Hb C but no Hb A (% Fmicro). This method has been evaluated through analyses of known mixtures of Hb F and Hb S. The Hb Fmicro levels in patients with sickle cell anemia and related conditions were compared with results obtained by alkali denaturation (% FAD) and conventional DEAE-cellulose chromatography (% FDE). This microchromatographic technique is a fast, simple, and sensitive method for Hb F quantitation in patients with Sickle cell disease.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007231 Infant, Newborn An infant during the first 28 days after birth. Neonate,Newborns,Infants, Newborn,Neonates,Newborn,Newborn Infant,Newborn Infants
D002845 Chromatography Techniques used to separate mixtures of substances based on differences in the relative affinities of the substances for mobile and stationary phases. A mobile phase (fluid or gas) passes through a column containing a stationary phase of porous solid or liquid coated on a solid support. Usage is both analytical for small amounts and preparative for bulk amounts. Chromatographies
D002848 Chromatography, DEAE-Cellulose A type of ion exchange chromatography using diethylaminoethyl cellulose (DEAE-CELLULOSE) as a positively charged resin. (From McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 4th ed) DEAE-Cellulose Chromatography,Chromatography, DEAE Cellulose,DEAE Cellulose Chromatography
D005319 Fetal Hemoglobin The major component of hemoglobin in the fetus. This HEMOGLOBIN has two alpha and two gamma polypeptide subunits in comparison to normal adult hemoglobin, which has two alpha and two beta polypeptide subunits. Fetal hemoglobin concentrations can be elevated (usually above 0.5%) in children and adults affected by LEUKEMIA and several types of ANEMIA. Hemoglobin F,Hemoglobin, Fetal
D006451 Hemoglobin, Sickle An abnormal hemoglobin resulting from the substitution of valine for glutamic acid at position 6 of the beta chain of the globin moiety. The heterozygous state results in sickle cell trait, the homozygous in sickle cell anemia. Hemoglobin S,Deoxygenated Sickle Hemoglobin,Deoxyhemoglobin S,Hemoglobin SS,Hemoglobin, Deoxygenated Sickle,SS, Hemoglobin,Sickle Hemoglobin,Sickle Hemoglobin, Deoxygenated
D006461 Hemolysis The destruction of ERYTHROCYTES by many different causal agents such as antibodies, bacteria, chemicals, temperature, and changes in tonicity. Haemolysis,Extravascular Hemolysis,Intravascular Hemolysis,Extravascular Hemolyses,Haemolyses,Hemolyses, Extravascular,Hemolyses, Intravascular,Hemolysis, Extravascular,Hemolysis, Intravascular,Intravascular Hemolyses
D006801 Humans Members of the species Homo sapiens. Homo sapiens,Man (Taxonomy),Human,Man, Modern,Modern Man
D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
D000755 Anemia, Sickle Cell A disease characterized by chronic hemolytic anemia, episodic painful crises, and pathologic involvement of many organs. It is the clinical expression of homozygosity for hemoglobin S.
