Psoralen photochemotherapy of psoriasis. 1979

E Hell, and C Hodgson, and V Manna

The value of PUVA therapy in selected patients with severe psoriasis has been confirmed. Suppression of the disease was incomplete in those patients whose disease was unstable, with associated seborrhoeic dermatitic features. No consistent change in the proportion of epidermal cells in DNA synthesis could be demonstrated during regression of the psoriasis as a result of PUVA therapy.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D008297 Male Males
D008730 Methoxsalen A naturally occurring furocoumarin compound found in several species of plants, including Psoralea corylifolia. It is a photoactive substance that forms DNA ADDUCTS in the presence of ultraviolet A irradiation. 8-Methoxypsoralen,Ammoidin,Xanthotoxin,8-MOP,Deltasoralen,Dermox,Geroxalen,Meladinina,Meladinine,Meloxine,Methoxa-Dome,Méladinine,Oxsoralen,Oxsoralen-Ultra,Puvalen,Ultramop,8 MOP,8 Methoxypsoralen,8MOP,Methoxa Dome,Oxsoralen Ultra

D011565 Psoriasis A common genetically determined, chronic, inflammatory skin disease characterized by rounded erythematous, dry, scaling patches. The lesions have a predilection for nails, scalp, genitalia, extensor surfaces, and the lumbosacral region. Accelerated epidermopoiesis is considered to be the fundamental pathologic feature in psoriasis. D004247 DNA A deoxyribonucleotide polymer that is the primary genetic material of all cells. Eukaryotic and prokaryotic organisms normally contain DNA in a double-stranded state, yet several important biological processes transiently involve single-stranded regions. DNA, which consists of a polysugar-phosphate backbone possessing projections of purines (adenine and guanine) and pyrimidines (thymine and cytosine), forms a double helix that is held together by hydrogen bonds between these purines and pyrimidines (adenine to thymine and guanine to cytosine). D004817 Epidermis The external, nonvascular layer of the skin. It is made up, from within outward, of five layers of EPITHELIUM: (1) basal layer (stratum basale epidermidis); (2) spinous layer (stratum spinosum epidermidis); (3) granular layer (stratum granulosum epidermidis); (4) clear layer (stratum lucidum epidermidis); and (5) horny layer (stratum corneum epidermidis).

D000328 Adult A person having attained full growth or maturity. Adults are of 19 through 44 years of age. For a person between 19 and 24 years of age, YOUNG ADULT is available. Adults
