Aspects of carbohydrate metabolism after pinealectomy in normal and pancreatectomized pigeon. 1979

N Mihail, and R Giurgea

In order to examine the regulatory function in glucidic metabolism of the pigeon pineal gland the authors used the model of complete pancreatectomy associated or not with pinealectomy and treatment with Epifizan. It results that the pineal gland has a hypoglycemic action and partially compensates the lack of the endocrine pancreas.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D010179 Pancreas A nodular organ in the ABDOMEN that contains a mixture of ENDOCRINE GLANDS and EXOCRINE GLANDS. The small endocrine portion consists of the ISLETS OF LANGERHANS secreting a number of hormones into the blood stream. The large exocrine portion (EXOCRINE PANCREAS) is a compound acinar gland that secretes several digestive enzymes into the pancreatic ductal system that empties into the DUODENUM.
D010180 Pancreatectomy Surgical removal of the pancreas. (Dorland, 28th ed) Pancreatectomies
D010856 Columbidae Family in the order COLUMBIFORMES, comprised of pigeons or doves. They are BIRDS with short legs, stout bodies, small heads, and slender bills. Some sources call the smaller species doves and the larger pigeons, but the names are interchangeable. D010870 Pineal Gland A light-sensitive neuroendocrine organ attached to the roof of the THIRD VENTRICLE of the brain. The pineal gland secretes MELATONIN, other BIOGENIC AMINES and NEUROPEPTIDES. Epiphysis Cerebri,Pineal Body,Corpus Pineale,Gland, Pineal,Pineal Bodies,Pineal Glands
D011183 Postoperative Complications Pathologic processes that affect patients after a surgical procedure. They may or may not be related to the disease for which the surgery was done, and they may or may not be direct results of the surgery. D006943 Hyperglycemia Abnormally high BLOOD GLUCOSE level. Postprandial Hyperglycemia,Hyperglycemia, Postprandial,Hyperglycemias,Hyperglycemias, Postprandial,Postprandial Hyperglycemias
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
