Lipid absorption and metabolism. 1979

A Kuksis, and N A Shaikh, and A G Hoffman

Metabolic processes occurring within the mucosal cell are critical in determining results of interactions between environmental agents and the alimentary tract. The absorption, metabolism, and transport of lipids affects most those agents which are lipid soluble. The understanding of the process involved in lipid absorption and transport is therefore important for both appreciation of the mechanism of uptake of these toxins and for an effective interference with it. Most of the detailed mechanisms of lipid absorption and transport have been proposed from in vitro studies with soluble cell-free systems. The present review integrates these results with recent in vivo and in vitro findings with intact animal tissues and isolated mucosal cells. While there is much general agreement occasional startling differences are also observed, which may have a bearing on the mechanism of normal fat absorption and on the understanding of the transport of the fat-soluble toxins across the mucosal villus cell.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D007408 Intestinal Absorption Uptake of substances through the lining of the INTESTINES. Absorption, Intestinal
D007413 Intestinal Mucosa Lining of the INTESTINES, consisting of an inner EPITHELIUM, a middle LAMINA PROPRIA, and an outer MUSCULARIS MUCOSAE. In the SMALL INTESTINE, the mucosa is characterized by a series of folds and abundance of absorptive cells (ENTEROCYTES) with MICROVILLI. D010712 Phosphatidic Acids Fatty acid derivatives of glycerophosphates. They are composed of glycerol bound in ester linkage with 1 mole of phosphoric acid at the terminal 3-hydroxyl group and with 2 moles of fatty acids at the other two hydroxyl groups. D002914 Chylomicrons A class of lipoproteins that carry dietary CHOLESTEROL and TRIGLYCERIDES from the SMALL INTESTINE to the tissues. Their density (0.93-1.006 g/ml) is the same as that of VERY-LOW-DENSITY LIPOPROTEINS. Chylomicron
D004041 Dietary Fats Fats present in food, especially in animal products such as meat, meat products, butter, ghee. They are present in lower amounts in nuts, seeds, and avocados. Fats, Dietary,Dietary Fat,Fat, Dietary
D004075 Diglycerides Glycerides composed of two fatty acids esterified to the trihydric alcohol GLYCEROL. There are two possible forms that exist: 1,2-diacylglycerols and 1,3-diacylglycerols. Diacylglycerol,Diacylglycerols
D005989 Glycerides GLYCEROL esterified with FATTY ACIDS. Acylglycerol,Acylglycerols
D000818 Animals Unicellular or multicellular, heterotrophic organisms, that have sensation and the power of voluntary movement. Under the older five kingdom paradigm, Animalia was one of the kingdoms. Under the modern three domain model, Animalia represents one of the many groups in the domain EUKARYOTA.
