Antifertility activity of alpha-chlorohydrin (3-chloro-1, 2 propanediol, U-5897) on the female rats. 1979

N K Lohika, and M Arya

alpha-chlorohydrin administration brings about regression in the corpus luteum and shedding of the uterine endometrium, indicating its luteolytic activity, alpha-chlorohydrin inhibited vaginal keratinization and interrupted the sex cycle. A dioestrous leucocytic pattern of the vaginal smear is retained during medication. Decreased synthesis of RNA, protein, sialic acid and glycogen concentration in the uterus and vagina suggest possible antioestrogenic action of the compound. The antifertility action of the drug may be due to its antioestrogenic property.

UI MeSH Term Description Entries
D009929 Organ Size The measurement of an organ in volume, mass, or heaviness. Organ Volume,Organ Weight,Size, Organ,Weight, Organ
D010053 Ovary The reproductive organ (GONADS) in female animals. In vertebrates, the ovary contains two functional parts: the OVARIAN FOLLICLE for the production of female germ cells (OOGENESIS); and the endocrine cells (GRANULOSA CELLS; THECA CELLS; and LUTEAL CELLS) for the production of ESTROGENS and PROGESTERONE. Ovaries
D002728 Chlorohydrins Any of the compounds derived from a group of glycols or polyhydroxy alcohols by chlorine substitution for part of the hydroxyl groups. (McGraw-Hill Dictionary of Scientific and Technical Terms, 5th ed) Chlorhydrins
D003338 Corpus Luteum The yellow body derived from the ruptured OVARIAN FOLLICLE after OVULATION. The process of corpus luteum formation, LUTEINIZATION, is regulated by LUTEINIZING HORMONE. Corpora Lutea,Lutea, Corpora
D004717 Endometrium The mucous membrane lining of the uterine cavity that is hormonally responsive during the MENSTRUAL CYCLE and PREGNANCY. The endometrium undergoes cyclic changes that characterize MENSTRUATION. After successful FERTILIZATION, it serves to sustain the developing embryo. Endometria
D004965 Estrogen Antagonists Compounds which inhibit or antagonize the action or biosynthesis of estrogenic compounds. Estradiol Antagonists,Antagonists, Estradiol,Antagonists, Estrogen
D005260 Female Females
D005298 Fertility The capacity to conceive or to induce conception. It may refer to either the male or female. D006080 Ovarian Follicle An OOCYTE-containing structure in the cortex of the OVARY. The oocyte is enclosed by a layer of GRANULOSA CELLS providing a nourishing microenvironment (FOLLICULAR FLUID). The number and size of follicles vary depending on the age and reproductive state of the female. The growing follicles are divided into five stages: primary, secondary, tertiary, Graafian, and atretic. Follicular growth and steroidogenesis depend on the presence of GONADOTROPINS. D000311 Adrenal Glands A pair of glands located at the cranial pole of each of the two KIDNEYS. Each adrenal gland is composed of two distinct endocrine tissues with separate embryonic origins, the ADRENAL CORTEX producing STEROIDS and the ADRENAL MEDULLA producing NEUROTRANSMITTERS. Adrenal Gland,Gland, Adrenal,Glands, Adrenal
